i have a wd my book hard drive connected by usb i only use it for storage of music and pics but it seem to be runing all the time i sure this cant be right if im not writing or reading from it

It is actually!

Your "My Book" HDD only goes off when you turn your PC off. Otherwise it remains on always. However, it is designed to go into standby mode if it isn't accessed for 10 minutes & even then, the blue rings stay lit up since it's technically still on.

You could also select the drive-go to properties, and then turn off indexing.
