I am a dorm resident that owns a ACER TravelMate
4021WLMi laptop, the only thing I use to keep me
occupied. I've owned it for nearly a year and I haven't had
any problems with it, and I keep it in good condition.
Unfortunately this morning I woke up to find my laptop
dripping wet from the screen down. The whole bottom
half of it was drenched, and the water damage was so
severe I found it in my desk drawers. There was no
evident signs of any intrusion (I keep my doors lock) and
the ceiling wasn't leaking. There wasn't anything I could
see around me that could've caused it physical harm
overnight. All I have is a humidifier, but I'm a bit skeptic
to it being the main culprit.I've already gone through the motions of trying to get
some warranty out of the computer, however I'm still
stumped as to what could've caused the damage in the
first place. Can anyone help me?

It appeared to be water but no positive.. what else could it
have been? The humidifier is abour 3 feet away on my
dresser but there's no way that it could of made that much
water .

"My door was locked and I'm the only one that has a key". I'm pretty sure there are others that have keys. The college for one. What about a girlfriend? Hope that isn't offensive, I'm guessing here from your sig.

No she doesnt have one. So what your saying is that there's
no possible way water could of got on it unless some
deliberatly did it.

I'm not in a position to state that. You are in a better position. Is there another floor above you? Ceiling wet????
Hey I thought of another one. Do you sleep walk?

OK, have you had the humidifier and the laptop positioned the same way before? If the humidifier is blowing humid air onto the laptop it could condense on it.

I've heard of sleepwalkers urinating in strange places.
Just one of many possibilities.

My money is on either the humidifier, as I suggested or an old girlfriend. Do you save your old emails. Someone may have read something they didn't like. Also, you aren't the first student to use the room. I doubt they change the locks every time.

im still letting it airout.. I took the battery out and am going
to wait atleast 24hrs until i try to work it.. unless you think
it's safe to do it sooner.

I don't know the exact circumstances or climatic conditions at the time but if the machine cooled whilst the closed room contained moist air then condensation is likely. Was it cold that night?
The "moisture content" of the air would be particularly high if you previously had a warm room with the humidifier running. Quite a lot of condensation could be produced on surfaces later on as they cooled down and even a cup full would be plenty.
My money would be on the humidifier - there appears to be no other rational explanation. Switch the humidifier off an hour before closing the room at night, turn it down a bit in the daytime too and get some more distance between it and the computer (if possible).
If you intend to keep running the humidifier during the day, then in cold weather maybe the installation of a small overnight background room heater would be worthwhile - just sufficient to keep above dew point.

Has anybody thought that his LCD screen might have a hairline crack and be leaking? I've seen them leak very slowly and still work until the liquid gets to a level where it will no longer operate.

The lcd material looks like it is not liquid. Have a look at this article at Wikipedia...

Hi Wombat!
I'm not sure I completely understand that article but I have a laptop in the shop right now with a cracked screen and it was wet when it came in, it's dry now, because it's been a while, but you can still see "wet spots" on the screen.
Of course, I could be wrong and it just looks like liquid. I don't think there would be enough in any case to cause the amount of liquid that ijeremy is talking about.

"I don't sleep walk."
How do you know?
Ever been awake to watch yourself not sleep walk?
Does this liquid have an odor?
Your silence will confirm any embarrassment on your part.

My guess would be that someone picked the lock to the door and poured the liquid (water, whatever) on the laptop when our college student was sleeping.
If there is no roommate, then I'd get a chain or bolt lock just in case the pranks escalate.
Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

I would say it was a condensation problem. Cold computer brought in a warm and humid room. Take a glass out of the fridge and see how quickly the glass fogs up and starts dripping on the table.
Did you have the "aquarium theme" screen saver on your computer? Maybe it started to leak, LOL.
