Hi, my 80GB HD has 4 partitions from C to F, 20 GB each and I want to joint all in one whole partition C as 80gb. I hear about a programm called Partition Magic, but I want another program, safe and more small and better freeware to do this. If you know about this or how can I do that just let me know.
Thanks in advance

Good luck. If you're messing with partitions you could lose everything anyway, especially if you don't know what you're doing. I think you would be better off backing up your data and starting fresh.

P.S. All hard drives die eventually, taking your data with them.

"seems very rush"

No tellin' what that means, but Ranish is highly regarded.

As GX1 says, if you don't know what you're doing, get backed up.

22gigs too big for dialup?

YER!

If you find something "small" it very likely will be for DOS. Winders is not good at small.

Personally I like to work with only one partition

If you have every thing backed up , I would format and delete the 4 partitions and fdisk 1 partition,
Then reload your back up

It seems that is what must be done, but my C drive is so well... it will takes me days to restore my program files to actual state...

You want it free

You want it small

You want it safe

You want it fast

You want it in a GUI form

Why not write the darn program yourself instead of wasting forum space.

Any programs installed on the partitions in question will always look for that program on that partition. If you erase the partition, the programs will not be able to run until you reinstall it on the newly formed partition. (I hope you understand that)

Partition Magic is not 22gigs in size. It is a 12-minute download on dialup, and well worth the time.

Partition Magic will combine all of your partitions and not loose your data, so you should reconsider using it. If you insist on some other program, use a Yahoo of Google search engine to find "partition resizing tools"

Anyone who has used PM like I have knows better than to say "yes it can do it".

Merging 4 partitions and not losing data is NOT doing to happen.

Your BEST bet is to delete three partitions and then extend c: to occupy the entire drive.

You will still need PM or similar program since the OS won't allow you to do it natively.

Then restore your data. This WILL work.

Keep in mind though this is DATA. Installed programs [installed with the OS on c: but the apps are on other drive letters] with registry entries is a WHOLE different story. It's best to uninstall the apps and reinstall after the partition expansion. Restore the apps data and you are fine.

Wanderer !!

Tend to disagree with you !!!

I ahve used PM and have merged and created 4 plus partitions with it !!!! and on a raided drive to boot.!!!!!!!!

So yes it can be done !!!!!!!!!!

You just need to do 1 partition at a time, merge the other partitions before merging it with the c drive.....

The program hasent let me down yet !!!!

IF IT AINT BROKE, DONT FIX IT

I would image C: then wax the whole thing and restore the image, resizing to 80GB. But that's probably way to simple.

@ Janos, respectfully:

Partition Mangler is a well-written program that does some pretty amazing things. It also has the potential to nuke your drive beyond any but a professional data recovery lab's ability to save your files. Simply extending a partition to include free space on a drive might be a no-brainer for PM, but there's always a risk when using it.

In the end, nothing's as amazing as a good backup.

Takeru,

The reason you were getting a negative response was that you were disregarding the advice people were trying to give and your arguments against their advice was less than reasonable.

You state that PM was too big to download over dial-up. It is 22Megs (not Gigs). You could have downloaded it, installed it and ran it in the time between your first post and your last post.

Ten you state that you didn't want to use Ranish because it is DOS based. So what? If you know what you are doing as you say you do it shouldn't be difficult to figure out. "Am very regret to done 4 partitions, maybe you can tell me the advantages and the misadv.. of that 4 `partitions procedure.". Again, doesn't seem like you even understand why you are doing what you are doing.

If you just need to do something NOW and can't wait. Copy your data from the last three partitions to the C drive or back up the data. Then delete the partitions using Windows and format the empty space as a new partition. At least you would only have two partitions instead of four. At least until you figure out what you want to do and how to do it.

Michael J

Boy did this one run a bit...; not going to get too involved though, but a comment or two...

Re' PM 8x and XP: There are many who will say it works fine with XP, and sadly there are more than a few who will say otherwise - having had disasterous results with it (they lost everything when partition tweaking...) You might be lucky using it...?

Ranish gets good reviews from many users; also the Knoppix (Linux on a CD) package has a similar util... Check out Riley books (Knoppix hacks - or something similar); it is a legit how to use Knoppix and its assorted utils - it does not mean how to illegaly hack... Book + CD is about $30... Whole thing is run/executed via the OS (Linux) on the CD; the drives in your system are merely resources a this stage, and can be reasonably manipulated as such... (but verified backups first...)_

Acronis is another that gets good/excellent reports...

Regardless I would ensure you have complete/valid backups of all critical items (that they are fully useable) which you do appear to have...

I would encourage a fresh start if at all possible... but you ain't keen that route. That being so (and backups in place...), merge the last two partitions first; verify all is well... Then merge that new enlarged partition into the second and verify... I'd call it quits there...; but if you really want to (must)... then merge the two remaining partitions - and verify...

By stopping when you have two partitions, you have still got the Primary with OS/apps etc. intact/working... and data only(?) in the now second (only) other partition. Having at least two partitions (as immediately above) is surely a preferable state of affairs overall?

The merging of partitions one at a time (and verifying each time) is essentially as per Janos; but I would be very cautious about putting my trust entirely in PM-8x - for reasons stated above... Perhaps consider Knoppix, Ranish (even though it is a dos based util...) or Acronis?

Ideally one would start afresh; at the least ghost/image the Primary and then reconfigure the drive to be as you wish (preferably with at least two partitions); then restore the c: (Primary) partition image; then copy backups to the appropriate partition...

Your call...?
