To make a long story short, my computer crapped out on me (endless boot/restart cycle) and I want to just wipe everything clean and start over. My computer, however, didn't come with a setup cd, only a built-in system recovery option, that, as a result of the initial problem, won't boot either. I tried doing a repair install with a setup disc from an xp pro disc i had, but for some reason it's not detecting an installed windows version anymore and it's not giving me the option to install windows to some partition anymore either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix things?

How far does the boot process go? Have you tried F8?

Prior to this evening, it would load to the XP logo screen, then go black, then reboot. Trying to boot into safe mode with F8 gave the same results. Now, however, after following step #5 is this article, I get an error message after the screen where I can hit F8 that says windows can't be started because of a corrupt system.sav file:

See if that helps even though it's for W2K.

thanks guapo, I've looked over that post before, but it wasn't working for me...i was getting an access denied message when trying to copy the files over. Honestly tho, I'm pretty frustrated trying to fix it and am ready to do a clean install.

"endless boot/restart cycle"

You probably have a hardware problem, not a software problem. Open the case & blow out the dust...make sure all the fans work, especially the CPU cooling fan.
