you maybe need to change your boot order in bios with cdrom first so the xpcd autoruns on the clean drive. if its an upgrade disk you just need to pop in the 98 for a while so xp can check to see if you got it or not. you dont have to install it.

Ok, I just want to help you, If you don't know how to boot from cd-rom you can do this, go to microsoft and download the boot cd creator for xp, download the file and follow directions, you will need 6 floppy disks not 1, after you make the boot disks just reboot the system and make sure you have disk 1 in your floppy drive, it'll ask you for disk 2 and 3.... format the hard with ntfs system if you want, then install xp, should be all set, any questions email me

You guys do realize that you don't have to go through all that.

If you go to disk cleanup, there is an option for you to delete the old OS. It is a backup in case you want to remove XP for some reason, so those files from your old OS are still there.

You can also go to add/remove programs and there should be a component in your list of programs called WINDOWS XP UNINSTALL. That is essentially your old OS.

I have almost the same problem as you. I had windows 98 and then I installed the 2000 but it was on english, so I couldn't overwrite my 98 that is in danish. So I have them both now, and it's making my hardware really slow. When I turn programs up it will take forever cause it is filling so much on my computer.

Steph.
