Subject: Wallpaper Hijacked- can you help?OS: XP HomeCPU/Ram: P4 / 512 |
Comment: I visited a site which reviewed spyware, and whilst there I got a virus warning on my laptop. My wallpaper has disappeared and is replaced by a blue screen with a "your computer appears to be infected ..." message. I cannot change this as the right mouse click is partially disabled. My anti-virus (Norton) and Adaware found 10-12 viruses and spyware most of which were cleaned out. I need to sit in front of customers with this laptop and I don't want this damned message on my desk top. Please help! Thanks PS - I can post a log of hijack this if it helps. PPS - now have got rid of hijackers wallpaper but still cannot reset wallpapers as right mouse click still disabled.

Reply: (edit)Perhaps one these will help? cwshredder (it's out there on the www). ccleaner (from ccleaner.com). Also the M$ Beta (anti-spyware/pest) util may help get rid of it? http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx and also note the comments re' the util at: http://blogs.msdn.com/larryosterman/archive/2005/01/06/347804.aspx You're using IE6 (default version for XP?) so there should be no problem running the M$ util; apparently it isn't available for IE5x. Once you are "clean" install (and keep upto date) AdAware and Spybot; also maintain your anti-virus util upto date (which almost certainly you are...), and the M$ Beta util.

Reply: (edit)reactivate active desktop, see if you can change wallpaper. If not-- go to run type sfc /scannow with your XP disc in the cd rom drive.

Reply: (edit)I had the same problem. first problem i had was the Desktop tab was not showing up in my Display Properties. to fix this i used REGEDIT. to fix this do the following Go to Run --> regedit Then go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System Look for the entries NoDispAppearancePage and noDispBackgroundPage. If they have 1 as their values, set them to 0. then restart the computer. this gave me back the Desktop tab. but it wouldn't allow me to change the wallpaper. to correct this problem. i started in safe mode and loged in as the Administrator, and navagated back to (Using REGEDIT) HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System and deleted the entry that had the current walpaper file. and then deleted the wallpaper picture that was being used for the wallpaper from the computer. when i restarted both problems were fixed. hope this helps
