Wallpaper but no Icons ???

Dell-laptop / Inspiron-1505
February 1, 2009 at 07:42:17
Specs: XP - pro, Core duo/512mb
Funny thing,

System was running fine. No issues or conflicts. Shut system down
the normal way by selecting "start> shutdown> turnoff".

Later, turn system back on, boot up looks fine, log in with password,
windows startup sound-bite starts, see wallpaper pops up, but no
icons and cannot access start menu. tried to use Windows button on
keyboard, no response.

Tried safemode, same thing, don't see the wallpaper, but I dont see
icons either. All keys on keyboard seem to work, numlock, shift,
capslock, ctrl-alt-del, fn keys.

Tried options: "Debugging"; "Last known good configurations" Same
result. The screensaver even works, but no Icons.

Question is what could cause such an issue? and how can it be
resolved?

Kye, Open your Task Manager (Alt/Ctrl/Del) click on File>New Task (Run) and type in:

explorer.exe

Click OK.

Does this bring back the icons and Taskbar?

This problem is usually virus/malware related.

Well, Tufenuf

Tried the task manager suggestion, got the following msg.

"windows cannot find 'explorer.exe'. Make sure you typed
the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file,
click the start button, and then click search."

Moreover, can not get to the search option. I also noticed in
Task manager that the "iexplorer.exe" & "explorer.exe" are
missing from the processes list.

The system has AVG & Ad-aware on it. Ran them both but
didn't fix the problem.

Kye, You may want to try a System Restore by using the safe mode option with the Command prompt to the closest date prior to when this problem started.

Kye, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 195 (right column) and download the "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" vbs file fix.

To use the VBS Files: Download .vbs file and save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.

NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry.

Hey!, Tufenuf

Thanks for the Link,

But tell me something, I tried to restore the "exporer.exe"
file that was missing from the processes tab in Task Mgr by
installing XP using the "repair Windows" option.

Will the restore link still work after this has been done??
