I have a ton of questions, My problem is I know more about computers than most around me,, but compared to some of you guys, I don't know jack. (I know enough to be dangerous)
easy questions,, has anyone made this option actually work ? (I have read a lot of posts,, but none that actually spell it out. Some have this, some say its not possible, some say it is)
if so,, did you have a firewalled router?
was the vpn server on a static IP or dynamic?
Did you have any other network protocals installed?
Was it a simple tcp/ip network,, or were there domains invlovled ?
Did you have simple networking enabled, or dissabled
I ask this, because I have tweaked almost everything in my setup, and still no luck. So I am going back to the complete basics, and asking some simple questions to start with. Im sure there will be more

Yeah I got VPN working on XP, 2000, and 98SE. Basically I added the ip of my workplaces' server and the ip of the firewall at my workplace into the trusted areas of my firewall software. Then I ran the create new connection wizard, chose vpn, typed in the ip of the FIREWALL in then connected using my username and password. I then clicked start, run, and typed in \\ then my server's IP address. This allows me to view the files on my server.
For VPN to work I think you need static IP, Iam using static IP and it works. I only have TCP/IP installed no other protocols, I have to connect to the domain on my workplace server.
What OS are you running? What internet connection do you have? Where are your problems stemming from? What firewall do you have? Do you have a user account on the machine you are connecting to?

Win XP Pro
I have a cable mobem using a SMC Barricade 7008br router/firewall. I have assigned static IP/s through my network.
I have created users inside the vpn connection.
Im not exactly sure where they are stemming from. Ports/OS/ or just plain missed something.
I have also given the VPN User an address range in which to loggin to.
under different configurations, sometimes the user can actually loggin, but still can't do any network browsing.
