vostro hard disk not recognised

Specs: Windows xp
i having this problem that few days back, windows wuld not load,a blue screen appeared stating some memory problem,and then automatic reload. i tried to open it in safe mode, it opened once but now it does not even let the windows load. nothing happens.it keeps on reloading. i figured there might be some problem with windows registry.i tried to reinstallwindows but it showed hard disk not found. what can i do now?

Check the first hint that it gave you first. Use Memtest to test your memory (RAM) since you can get all sorts of misleading errors IF your memory is bad. You first download a copy (either installer to create a bootable floppy, OR an ISO image to burn a bootable CD), create the disk, set the drive as first on boot order, and boot to Memtest. Run Memtest through ALL tests (8 I believe - until you get errors), if there are errors, or it freezes, rerun with only one stick of memory at a time to see which stick is bad (assuming you have more than one) and replace as needed. Exit, remove disk, and allow it to reboot.
If there are no errors, or this does not help, download hard drive test utility from your hard drive manufacturer's website (ISO image) and burn a bootable CD. Boot to the utility and run the tests (do not format unless you are sure you need or want to reload windows). Post back results.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
If all else fails, read instructions.
