Comment:
I just installed Windows XP last night on an old Aptiva that came with Windows ME when I bought it years ago. I noticed at the bottom of the screen in the right hand side there is no volume control in the tray. How can I get it to install in the tray.

You need to install all the drivers, that includes the motherboard, video card (if present), audio card (if present), ethernet card (if present), etc...
As aegis said, you're going to have to locate, download & install XP compatible drivers for all your devices...not just sound.

mack_1932, If by chance your audio drivers are installed and your sound is working go to Start>Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices. On the Volume Tab under Device Volume, put a check in the box that reads: Place volume icon in the taskbar, click Apply/OK.
