Hi,

I am having some strange behavior with a Windows XP PC. A couple days ago I launched the browser and it said that I couldn't navigate to a page because of a security issue. It gave me an option of closing the browser or continuing to navigate "unprotected". So I opened up McAfee and it said everything was running fine.

When I went back to the browser and to see what would happen, I clicked on browsing unprotected. It took me to a SafeSoft site that was selling virus protection.

I did a search on this and it appears it is Personal Defender 2009 but after finding some removal instructions, none of the processes it listed were in my active processes. I also do not have a Personal Defender folder in Program Files.

A day later, I am able to navigate to yahoo.com, but strangely I can not get to either www.symantec.com or www.mcafee.com. So I still believe this is some odd behavior going on and it's almost like the browser is trying to trick me into thinking everything is fine.

One last thing, now when the screensave mode kicks in, it goes to the screen where it asks which user you want to use. It never did this before. It gives options of "Owner" and another with a bunch of random characters.

Help please!

Download Malebites.com and run a scan. You have a fake virus. Do not open that Defender site software as it is an exe file which will infect your entire system. It effects browsers,e-mail security, registry. The Malebites software will determine if this is on your system. Good luck

Hi,

I tried going to http://www.malwarebytes.org and the browser says it can't find the server. I also downloaded Firefox and the same problem is coming.

Also, when I type in a URL directly in the web browser, the browser always takes me to "mywebsearch" search results, instead of the actual webpage. MyWebSearch is a toolbar installed on on the browser that seems to aggregarte Ask, Yahoo, Google results. However I am not typing the URL in the search box, I am typing it in the URL box but still getting pointed to the search results.

One other point I forgot to mention is that when I first encountered the bogus "your system is not protected", I started my McAfee to do a scan and while doing it a pop-up appeared asking if I wanted to "Enable Protection". I clicked on this and in hindsight, I believe it was the virus program getting me to click on something, which I unfortunately did. Not sure if this information is helpful in diagnosing my situation.

Thanks for the help!
