have a pc which wont allow me to do much in the line of troubleshooting. it will not allow me to run norton anti virus. i did however allow me to run the anti virus in safe mode whcih quarantined 6 bloodhound worm virues. the virus definitions are quite old so i suspect another lingering virus. it wont allow me to update, the internet works intermittently. i tried installing symmantec anti virus 8.0 and AVG anti virus but it wouldnt let me. i installed spy sweeper whcih found 46 spyware. Then when restarting a recieved StopOxA error but it does still allow me to boot. still have lots of problems on internet. im at a loss. any help, suggestions appreciated

in order to get rid of any virus or worm you should turn off system restore. Then boot back to safemode and run your spyware programs first then try to run your AV stuff. If it still will not run the AV then you must change the name of the AV software to anything else but donot keep any mention of virus or scan and you should then be able to run it. In addition to what lurks said above, I am a believer in the "power of three": >lavasoft Ad Aware (set to Deep Scan"); >Spyware Blaster >Spybot Search & Destroy D/load and run all three; they are free and the best there is. Sometimes they even aren't enough if you get CWS or a morpher. Another pretty decent program is Kephyr Bazooka. If nothing works, you got a bad one.
