Hello

I do hope someone can help me. My partner was downloading some music in i-tunes when the computer crashed. Once re-booted the apperance of the taskbar had changed. the internet also no longer worked! We have tried System Restore, however it will not allow use, saying "System Restore cannot protect your computer". We have checked and the system restore is turned ON & I remember using it only a few weeks ago.

We have also tried to log on in safe mode, system restore does not work here either. We attempted to log in as administrator, unfortunatly the previous owner has set a password which we do not know and therefore have no access to the administrator files.

I contacted my internet provider who informed me that it was a problem with DCHP and that i should get a professional to look at it.

Is there anthing that I can do myself?

I should also point out that we have Norton Anti-Virus installed, which we have now turned off incase it was blocking us. As we cannot access the administrator files I am unable to delete Norton completly.

PLEASE HELP!!!

You can run chkdsk

Start
Run
CMD
then you should see a C:\
Type chkdsk /r
Hit Enter
You should receive a message that chkdsk can't be run but it will be run after you restart the computer.

Try that

If that doesn't work, you can run a Windows Repair from the OS Installation CD.
