Comment:

Hi my virus scanner AVG has
identified "do_not_delete" as a virus and says
it has removed it. A fresh scan shows no
viruses, however in my startup file in msconfig
there is a "do_not_delete". Does anybody
know if this is in fact a virus . If so how do I
delete it.
Regards
Scommstech.

... if "AVG " stated that it has done its job just uncheck the relevant pointer in msconfig!

"...do_not_delete_me_I'aint_a_virus..."

... does not mean it "aint" ... (in this case "was" past tense)

... if you're worried @ least you have the option to recheck the pointer box later....

Download and installed both Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Update the detection definations of both. Scans best done in safe mode. Your post was more suitable for the security and virus forum.
