Which Virus protection are you referring to?

Did you install SP3 & additional updates? If you are trying to install a Microsoft AV you may need to have SP3 installed and possibly also Windows Genuine Advantage, which is also an update.

Indeed, as indicated by OtheHill, most AV software these days require that SP2 or SP3 be installed if you are wanting to use it on Windows XP.

I put my old Win 98 away in the loft a month or two back. At that time the only AV that was available to run on it was Avast version 4 - you can get it here:
http://www.oldapps.com/avast_antivi...

I was still getting updates too, although you might have to do so manually. An AV without current updates is insecure.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

I don't think the virus database updates that Avast release now are compatible with Avast version 4, so you may find it's pointless installing it.

Anything could have happened in the last few weeks but, as I said, Avast 4 was updating just fine then. The update file download for version 4 still shows here:
http://www.avast.com/download-update

I could drag my old W98 out of the loft again and check if necessary but am not prepared to go to that trouble unless the poster comes back and shows some interest in pursuing Avast.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
