Virus or Scam?

We have a HP Pavilion 7915 Computer with 128 Mb RAM and a 40 Mb HDD The operating system is Winxdows XP Home edition.

I just received an E-Mail from a (supposed) member of an on line club that I belong to. I don't know this person, but his name appears in the club membership roster. His note was a warning that he may have sent me, and everyone else in his address book, a virus and that I can only remove it by deleting a file. He states that I should go to "find files" and search for jdbgmgr.exe Sure enough, it's at C:\windows\system32. He says the only way to eliminate the "virus" is to delete the file. He further states that neither McAfee nor Norton will detect it. He also states that the virus will be dormant for two weeks before it wreaks havoc with my system.

Question: Is the file C:\windows\system32\jdbgmgr.exe a virus? Or is someone trying to get me to eliminate a file needed to run Windows? I'm leary since the file is located in Windows\system32. I don't want to destroy my 'puter by eliminating the file, but I do not want a virus running around loose inside it either. HELP!

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Rich

I think that that is a hoax.
Personally, I have running WinXP and I too found that file. I couldn't tell you its purpose, but it is VERY doubtful that it is a virus.
I do also have Norton SystemWorks 2002, but I guess that its "undetectable" :P

At any rate, I wouldn't go about deleting it.

Go to the following;
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html

this email is a hoax.

NOTE: If you have already deleted the Jdbgmgr.exe file, some Java applets may not run correctly. This is not a critical system file. The file version may vary with your operating system and version of Internet Explorer. If you want to restore the file, please contact Microsoft for instructions
