Even though I've been using the Norton's 2003 that came bundled with my system, I found FVProtect.exe running when I checked Task Master. I ran Stinger which deleted many copies of the W32/Netsky.p@MM virus.
I then installed a copy of McAfee VirusScan 4.51 that I had and it found (and deleted) over 13,000 (Yes, 13K) copies of W32/Netsky.p@MM virus in various files with names like A0014158.exe, A0019787.pif and A0018282.scr.
All of these files were located in a three directories named System Volume Infomation\_restore{2D063E58-819D-484F-A343-1FA10C07443B}\RP55, \RP56 and \RP57.
So, besides the fact that there is no way I'm going to buy the license for Nortons, I'm wondering what has happened to my system now that these 13,000 files have been deleted. Can I expect a System Restore to work properly? Should I create a Restore Point now and never go back past this one? Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

Disable System Restore - reboot - enable System Restore. That will delete all System Restore files and you can then create as many more as you like.
Are you running a firewall, are you up-to-date with MS critical updates, do you run regular system maintenance (fully updated AV scan, AdAware, SpyBot, CWShredder)? Do you regularly (daily) update your Norton 2003 AV? The Norton 2003 which comes bundled with your system is just the very basic program - you must update the NAV files using Liveupdate and/or auto update.
Good luck

turn your restore off, reboot computer then turn it back on,then reboot it worked for me,or if you can delete those files and you should be fine just make sure you do a scan right after for more viruses

Valerie:
Are you running a firewall: Yes, a hardware firewall built into a 3Com router.
Are you up-to-date with MS critical updates: Yes, automatic update is enabled.
Do you run regular system maintenance (fully updated AV scan, AdAware, SpyBot, CWShredder)
Yes, Daily Full System Scan with Norton. Activity logged checked on occasion, daily scans always show as completed. AdAware run at least once a week.Do you regularly (daily) update your Norton 2003 AV? Yes, Live Update enabled and running.
I will follow the steps to clean up System Restore via the reboot.
As to Norton's capabilties, this is the second time Norton has failed me on this machine. Last month something essentially turned it off. I could not enable Live Update or scan e-mail. I ended up having to restore the entire system from the original bundle CD. I scanned all the data files I backed up with 3 different on-line scanners so I assume they were clean before I restored them. See the 5th post in this forum's thread entitled System Restore Not Working for the results of the different on-line scan engines. Different engines found different viruses but Norton never found any of them. My relationship with Norton is over.

Norton Update:
I just uninstalled the bundled Nortons from a 2nd system and installed McAfee VirusScan 4.5.1. McAfee found 1 file infected with JS/NoClose and 2 files infected with VBS/Psyme. Just like on my other system, LiveUpdate was enabled and a full system scan was run daily.
How many thousands of people think they are safe based on the fact that they are running Norton 2003?
