I'm running an Athlon 1700 with 512 MB DDR RAM with Windows XP Pro and 2 hard drives (40 GB & 60 GB).
After about 15 minutes of turning on the computer (even if I've not run any apps) Windows pops up the message "Windows - Virtual Memory Minimum Too Low" and proceeds to readjust the size of my paging file. At this point, the entire system slows down and becomes extremely sluggish.
I've tried every possible variation of changing the size and location of my paging file. It is now set to be System Configured on my secondary hard drive (which has over 40 GB free space). And I keep getting this problem.
When checking system resources (Ctrl + Alt + Del) I see that SVCHOST.exe is eating up a huge amount of RAM (upwards of 400,000 KB--yes, 400 MB). What the hell is this? How do I resolve my VM problem and get my system running as fast as its supposed to with my hardware?
Please help!!! Thank you in advance!

Have you downloaded this patch yet??
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/bulletin/MS01-059.asp

I downloaded the patch and installed it successfully. However, I'm still getting the Virtual Memory problem. SVCHOST.exe (LOCAL SERVICE) still uses roughly 400,000 KB of RAM at any one given time. Is this my problem?
What else can I try to resolve this?

Have a look here http://www.computing.net/windows2000/wwwboard/forum/22612.html the only to solve it seems to be response No 15.
But also try setting your Virtual Memory Minimum at 640 and max at 768

I tried the suggestions in the previous post, but none of them seem to be solving my problem.
I ran TaskList and found all the stuff this particular version of SVCHOST.exe is controlling. Here's the list it came up with.
SVCHOST.EXE:
AudioSrv, BITS, Browser, CryptSvc, Dhcp, dmserver, ERSvc, EventSystem, FastUserSwitchingCompatibility, helpsvc, lanmanserver, lanmanworkstation, Messenger, Netman, Nla, RasAuto, RasMan, Schedule, seclogon, SENS, ShellHWDetection, srservice, TapiSrv, TermService, Themes, TrkWks, uploadmgr, W32Time, winmgmt, WmdmPmSp, wuauserv, WZCSVC
Whatever is taking up 400 MB of my RAM is listed in the chunk above. Any clue as to which one the culprit might be? Any more suggestions?
I disabled SVCHOST.exe from TaskManager and the amount of RAM being used was cut down by about ten-fold (but it starts up every time I reboot).
Please let me know of any more suggestions.
