This isn't an XP specific Q, but hopefully someone will know the answer !!......

My son wants to play Final Fantasy 7 on his laptop while away on holiday soon. He recently installed a cut-down version ocupying about 350mb space which doesn't require any cdroms.

It worked fine via his docking station which has a cdrom drive, but wouldn't work on his laptop which has no cdrom drive (cannot find cdrom error)

So we downloaded daemon-tools virtual cdrom drive, made an iso image of the FF7 folder and hey presto - it worked.

Only prob now is that if he tries to save the game, it produces a 'not enough disk space' error. Of course it can't write to the image file !!

There is no option within the game to save to a seperate folder, so how the heck are u supposed to save a game using a virtual cdrom drive (of which running games is supposed to be its main advantage !!)

I have scoured the net for an answer to this without success and looked at other virtual cdrom drive utilities, but they ALL use images.

Any advise gratefully rec'd.

If it was me... I'd just do that small install again and use another program to "crack" the program so that it doesn't look for the CD-Rom anymore... gamecopyworld.com might have what you're looking for.

TK's idea of using a crack would work. But what I didn't understand was whether you installed the game from the virtual drive, or if you are playing it straight off the virtual drive. The idea is to open the game on the virtual drive (the image), install it to c: and then use the virtual drive as a "cd". Did you do this?

Thx for the replies guys.....

To TK: I found a 'no-cd' patch at megagames.com and now the game runs ok without using an image file/virtual drive etc. :))

To Usil: The game doesn't require an install - it runs standalone from the FF7 folder (kazaa FF7.zip included a reg file). An iso image was made of the folder and daemon-tools ran the game from the image.
I still can't see the point of using an image file to run a game when there is no way to save it !!

Oh well :)
