My computer recently started restarting itself, but when it restarts, it just powers down, then boots up again - After it did this two times in a row, a bubble appeared in the bottom corner (I run XP, and the comp is about 3 years old) and said "Windows has detected a Spyware infection!" and the computer continued shutting off and restarting. I tried to boot into safe mode so I can run Ad-aware or something to try to get rid of the issue, but whenever I get to the screen by pressing F8 on startup to boot into Safe Mode, my keyboard stops working, and I've tried it in all USB slots. I've tried using MSConfig, but my computer shuts off before it can do the restart into safe mode. Also, after a few restarts, my computer now displays the "Video Mode Not Supported" box when Windows starts up normal. No idea what to do now - any suggestions?

Take your XP install disk (you have a legit copy, right?)

Boot with the XP install disk and format and install XP again.

Better yet, tell the installer to DELETE the current partition and create a NEW one.

It will then ask if you wish to format the RAW (blank space) on the current partition, select yes. and tell it to install XP to the newly created partition.

Sorry, but this will ERASE ALL of your existing data, but your PC is too far gone to do anything else.

Maybe, if you have an additional hard drive, you could backup your files; or connect the HD to another PC and backup in that manner.

After you install XP again, you will then need to use the MOBO driver CD to get everything to work again. (drivers for your hardware)

If you don't have the driver CD, again - the mfgr's website is the place to find the drivers you need.

Best of luck.

This reminds me of the first big worm that was on the internet hitting xp because most people didn't have their firewall on. It would make your computer restart after about 30 seconds or a minute. I think it got in on the messenger service that xp had ON by default at the time. What was the name of that worm?
Now I remember it was the msblaster worm. I guess it was the rpc service.

Alright - I haven't done anything to the computer yet besides just trying to start it up, and now it no longer shuts down automatically after starting up, I have a non-USB keyboard working that allows me to boot into Safe Mode, but I still get the "Video Mode Not Supported" message in Safe Mode and when I boot up Normal. Did my video card just take a hit? As for the Spyware or virus, whatever it was, I can't see if it's affecting my computer any more, but it certainly isn't shutting my computer down repeatedly.

Usually when it says that the video is set to more or less resolution than the monitor will handle.

Is there any way to change the resolution without being logged into Windows? I checked out the setup screen (del key) while booting, and didn't see anything there.

Maybe someone else could say for sure or not but if you can boot from the cd and run the recovery console you might be able to put in C:\WINDOWS\system32\desk.cpl and get the display properties window to open to set the resolution. I have never tried this so I don't know if it would work or not.
One thing that puzzles me is that when in safe mode the resolution is always set to 640 x 480 and any monitor should be able to handle that. Does it actually boot to windows to get the message and then freeze or?
