If you think it may be your temperature download PCalert4. It is free. It displays realtime temps of your computer including your motherboard and cpu. It also displays realtime voltages of all the components connected to your board. A nice program, It has solved some of my cpu-temp problems, mostly by process of elimination though. But it does help.

First of all go to start run and type in
dxdiag.exe

check to make sure all is well with no errors.

Secondly I would attempt to test the video card drivers. Latest is not always greatest.

Go to add remove programs and remove the drivers.

Then delete the C:Nvidea Folder

Go to device manager and and delete your display adapter.

Then reboot and reinstall your latest chipset drivers.

Next put the original drivers in from your video card cd.

Test it and see if it still happens. If not you know it is the drivers.

If above does not work, then it may be direct x9 if you are using it. Many games are not dx9 compatible.

You can do a system restore back to before you installed the directx 9 and again test it to see if that was the problem.

Good Luck

I had performance problems with the newer NVidia drivers with my 4600TI and 4200TI AGP8X. (I have various computers running various kind of systems.)

I found that the older drivers worked best. Version 41.09 I believe is what I use with those cards.

The 43.xx, 44.xx, etc. series of drivers perform better with FX cards.(Although they say it should work with all cards).

I have been to many gaming sites and many people have found the same thing.

You can get the older drivers from the NVidia archive. When you go through the 3 step selection process and get to the most updated driver. They will have a link to the archive on the left hand menu.

If this doesn't fix your problem it is still something to keep in mind for gaming performance.
