Video files not displaying in XP

OS: WinXP Pro Sp1
CPU/Ram: 600 mhz/320 mb ram

When I play a dvd, an avi or an mpeg file, the images aren't displaying...only audio is present. I downloaded and installed the latest mpeg codecs and it still hasn't worked...any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. I have a toshiba protege 7200 series laptop.

Try updating the video drivers, maybe.

I've updated the video drivers already...and it still hasn't improved... :(
