Only one task, but it needs to be done well. I want to transfer a couple dozen VHS movies (recorded from cable) to DVDs. These are for my own personal use.
I'd appreciate a suggestion for the best software to use for this process. I have sufficient RAM, a good CPU, a new DVD burner in the tower, and a stack of blank DVDs waiting for Hollywood's finest. :)

You will need an analog to digital capture card. It can be PCI or USB. There are many varieties, I've had very good luck with Hauppauge products. I prefer Nero to edit and burn the DVD's.

For a relatively inexpensive External USB Video Capture Device you may check this out:

Hi
not putting anyones bonfire out here , but why bother other with capture card stuff?
now they have really dropped in price
borrow /buy a tv-dvd recorder copy straight across vhs to dvd, v easy:) & no compression / loss of quality either.(for home dv use of course..;)

"copy straight across vhs to dvd, v easy"
Easy answer...Editing.
Those home movies can be extremely boring without any editing or without adding music. Otherwise, your idea is good even though teh prices still are not low enough for my liking.
Besides; one pays over $1,000 for a fast PC, that person is going to want to use it for something other than checking emails.
