What is the best way to copy/record VHS tapes to DVD?
Combi/VHS/DVD recorder or from 2 separate systems? 1 DVD player and 1 VHS player separatly?

Don't quite understand the 2nd part of your question. But,...

I have no experience with the set top recorders. BUt if all you want to do is copy directly to a DVD with no editing and no menus, they should suffice. But for the most flexibility and the best quality you would need to get a video capture device for your computer. Then you can edit the video, add menus, captions, etc.

You will need the proper hardware AND software.

Hardware: A tv or video capture card with component video and audio inputs... Hauppage capture card for example. Hauppage will come with enough software to at least give you an MPEG2 video which can be burned to disk and used in some of the newer DVD players.

If however, you want a REAL dvd good for any dvd player then you will have to go a step further and purchase a video editing program such as Nero or pinnacle. These will allow you to edit and create a REAL dvd for any machine.

I've done this with a Video Capture card and an Adaptec AVC-2210 converter external box. After lots of money and a real pain in the -ss, I finally bought a front room Sansui VRDVD4005 which creates a DVD directly from a VHS Tape without my help! Kmart sells these now for under a $100.00.

The link you posted above is a VHS\DVD PLAYER not a RECORDER, the dvd drive unit will only PLAY discs and is not capable of burning a disc. You would need a unit similair to the one you mention but with DVD recording capabilities.
