Specs: windows xp , P4 HT 3ghz / 512
hey al, erm ive got a sony vaio vgc-v2m, which has been running fine for the last 4 years, the other night it crashed the screen went black for about a second then a blue screen appeared with 'hard error' being displayed, i didnt take much notice of this and just restarted my pc, now all that happens is it loads up as normal untill the boot screen then stops and has a continuous mutiple beep, kinda like when you hold a button on your keyboard. and it stays like that??

anything i can do with it ?
i know its old now so im prepared for the worst

Those beeps are called a POST (Powered On Self Test) Look up the BIOS manufacturer and POST beep codes. Take care in listening to the beeps though (IE 1 short 2 long). And see what it is but i have a feeling your HDD is failing also try to download Hitachi drive fitness tester and burn ISO to CD to test HDD.

Fix is semi easy. Look up codes here (Good luck unless you're really savvy). Good chance you will need a new HDD (~75$) and a copy of windows XP (Free off certain internet site....) You have a product key showing you actually purchased a copy of windows at one point (Multicolored tab 25 alphanumeric digits bottom of laptop). But i second downloading Hitchi DFT and running it on your HDD.

ok so i go back the other night as ive been away working ....switched on the pc noise this time just loads as normal:
press power on
fans kick up
it beeps once
then loads the vaio logo and p4 logo after
then goes to a black screen with a white cursor it flashes about 4 times goes down a line then back up to its orginal place and dissapears, my hdd light flashes once...and then nothing just a black screen.

the only thing i have noticed is normally if you were to switch it off by holding the power button normally its a couple seconds of holding then it switches off no as soon as you press it if goes off instantly???
dunno if that means anything to you guys?

yeah ive still got the xp sticker on the back with serial number on it
