Each time i boot the computer with Windows XP, the HD LED indicator (hard drive light) is always on, even when it is evident that there is no hard drive usage. This never happened under Windows 98 or ME, so it took me by surprise. Also, everything is normal if not booted into Windows XP.

Thanks for any advice.

Has that light been on since the very first boot of XP?

Seems like there is some kind of disk activity. Does the machine have an internet connection open at boot time? Maybe one of the windows updaters is running in the background without your knowledge?

Light on about 2 seconds after the Windows XP boot screen comes on. Disk Light + Disk Activity is normal before that. After that, the light is always on, even though the HD dosn't make the noise that is associated with disk usage and the LED light, and even though the light is always on, the hard drive never gets hotter than 45 degrees C, even though previously under Windows 9x the HD will rise to 60 degrees C with intensive disk activity (so there is little disk activity under windows XP even though the light is always on).

Do you have Norton loading at boot up? I've read elsewhere that Norton and XP dont always get along aka strange things happen within XP when Norton is running.

Others claimed that once they totally removed Norton from the system, the hard drive led only lights when the hard drive spins. Odd but true.

Try uninstalling Norton and see if thats the problem. You can always reinstall it, if thats not it.

One more thing:
It could also be that the bios on the motherboard needs to be flashed-upgraded. How old is the system we are talking about here?

Yep, I do have Norton Systemworks 2003 Professional installed. However, there is another strange twist to it. When the system is in Standby mode, the HD light goes off, and becomes normal after the system is resumed. However, the same problem happens after reboot.

And my computer is a new one:
PCChips 841L MoBo
AMD XP 2100+
256 SDRAM
40GB 7200rpm ATA133 HD (Maxtor)

BIOS is already flashed to the newest ROM(Aug. 02).

Hope Symantec has figured out a solution for this.
(And I'll try to uninstall + reinstall Norton)

I would try UNinstalling the Norton, or at the very least DISable it from being active when Windows boots, then let us know what happens.

I have the same problem as you do. I have some consistencies with your setup as well.

Win Xp Pro Sp1
Maxtor Hard drive

I have not updated my BIOS yet, but that is what I might try next. But I would like to know if we have anything in common first. Do you have a zip drive? Do you have a Plextor CD-RW? A DVD drive? What kind of power supply?

Please respond...

I also have exactly the same symptoms on an older HP8670C computer that I recently upgraded to Windows XP. The hard-drive LED will only behave normally after I restore from Standby. I do not have Norton installed. Another HP8670C with the original video and sound cards and different software that was also upgraded to XP does not have this problem.
