Hi,firstly I'd like to state that XP is brilliant and everything works fine, never had any problems - except for one, and that is - it takes nearly a minute before the desktop appears i.e it boots up showing the Intel splash screen- sits there for 40 secs or so then proceeds to the windows screen - by the time the desktop appears aminute has passed [1ghz, p3, 512ram, 32vid-card]

My computer used to boot up in 15 seconds...but now it does it in 41 seconds (ie: the computer has completed booting up, all of my startup programs have been processed and the desktop is ready for me). Do you have prefetch on? Try running bootvis from microsoft also
You might want to disable the intel splash screen through bios...it'll shave off a few nanoseconds or so...(although I don't notice it, of course)
I have 1.7 ghz, 256ram, 64mb video
