Hi
Ive been attempting to install Windows XP Professional. I put it in the cdrw, reboot and set cdrom as first boot device. It boots fine, but i notice something wrong...its going very slow.....takes about 2 hours to get to 14% in the DOS install portion... I dunno if this has to do anything with me having linux on this machine before i installed. I formatted the drive fully...dunno what to do......also the cdrom isnt fully spinning up the cd like its copying files fast, its just like pulsing, it will spin up, then stop, spin up, stop, spin up, stop etc. but my HD Light is on non stop during this?

It sounds like you may be booting to DOS and then connecting to your CD ROM, changing to the i386 directory and running the OS setup from there. There may still be something else wrong, maybe bad CD or CD ROM, but I've always had a very slow install if I don't load smartdrv.exe before I execute the XP setup. Have you tried booting from the CD and running the XP Setup like that. If you feel you have to boot from you DOS disk, then load the HIMEM.sys, the CD ROM drivers, the SMARTDRV.exe, and finally the Windows XP Install. Hope this helps!

I also think it sounds like the disk is dirty or maybe there is alot of scratches on it. Try it in another system, if it does the same thing it is probally the disk.
