Comment:

For about 10 minutes on logging onto the net (ASDL), my computer will take up to a minute to carry out mouse tasks. All this time, I can hear the usual noise of work being carried out, even without being requested. Once these "tasks" have been completed, the machine runs perfectly. I've checked that it isn't carrying out Windows or Virus update, and carried out an up to date Norton virus check.
Is there any way that I can establish what these tasks are that is presumably slowing the machine down so much? Cntrl/Alt/Del show just the open web page.
Thanks

Ctrl+Shift+Esc, click the processes tab. What do you see? Watch the CPU usage when you logon.

1) Start, Run services.msc and make sure all running services are set to start automatically (instead of manually). Write down what changes you make, though!

2) Start, Run eventvwr.msc and look for any errors in the system log.

3) Maybe Install any critical windows updates.

4) Maybe Defragment your hard drive. (Run dfrg.msc)
