very slow boot up

OS: winme/xp dual
CPU/Ram: ahmed thlon/512

senms to take a abnormally long time to boot to OS choice screen goes blank (black ie) then when microsoft xp starts loading it also takes an awful long time & the screen again goes blank
desktop icons are slow to load too(intermittently)

Try disabling some startup items.
Here's how you do it...
Go to Start-> Run-> msconfig
Click on the startup tab
Uncheck the items that you dont need to be started when the computer boots.(You can uncheck everything if you like to)
Click on Apply and Close.
And then restart the computer.

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed, freezing up or slowing down.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have there problems.

Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.

Hmm... Have you tried disabling the DNS Client Service in the Services?
