Ok, hereīs my problem:
When I analyzed my 40 gig HD in XPīs Defragmenter the other day, it had 24% total fragmentation, so I decided it was time to defrag. So I started the defrag... At first at noticed that it seemed to be very slow... The "moving netlog.txt" etc at the bottom of defrag sugested that it took some 10 secs to move 1 txt file! I didnīt bother though, and left the computer for 2 hours. When I returned, 1% had been completed. Still all files seemed to take forever to move... Gifs, tgas, jpgs, txts, logs, you name it! How can this be? Sure, I havenīt defraged in a while, but a total defrag time of ~ 200 hours??? Anyone knows what to do? I tried running defrag in Safe-mode as well, still same thing... Also, my swapfile is on a diffent drive than the XP installation, does this have anything to do with it?
On to system speccs:
Athlon Thunderbird 1.2 GHz
256 RAM
Asus A7V Motherboard
GeForce 2 GTS 32 meg
40 gig ATA HD
Soundblaster 1024 Live!
3com 3C905TX-based Network adapter
XP Pro OSHope I didnīt forget anything!

Have you turned off hibernation and system restore ( backup your system to a different drive first ) before you defrag? Also, did you delete all temporary and other unnecessary files?

I'd leave it defragging...you can't calculate total defragging time by multiplying how much it took for 1% to be done by 100, it just doesn't work that way...you may notice that it may suddenly jump to 50%, turn your computer in the morning, start your defrag and come back in the afternoon, I am confident you will find it is all done!

unfortunatly the slow defrag is one of xp problems. i've tried three defraggers and the best one is Voptxp and it's not exactly formula like in speed either.

Defragging the hard drive will be very slow, now XP uses NTFS and now hard drive sizes are much larger than they used to be. Make sure all screen savers, standy, hibernation, and all power managment systems are off, then start the defrag, and let it run its own course, it may take a while, but it's the only way. It takes ages for mine to defrag as well, one of XP's few bad points

Download the 30 day free trial full version of Diskeeper:
http://www.execsoft.com/trialware/diskeeper/download.asp?ad=cn1
It is faster than the lite version included with XP. Workstation or Server, both will work. Once you get that first defrag done, future sessions will be much quicker.
