Dual boot setup on dual drives ME on C drive and XP on D I just had a real weird problem, mabey you people can help.In XP I was installing Nero's CD burning software, finished, and was prompted for reboot. On reboot I got the dual boot screen and opted to return to XP when I pulled the message "Windows cannot find the drive you specified, please ensure boot path is correct and hardware is functioning correctly". I booted to Win ME and checked "My Computer".The secondary drive(D) and both its partitions are gone!!. I checked this in the device manager and its the same thing(not even listed). I tried a system restore and it will not let me access any date prior to the CD software install, although they are shown, and I can create new restore points,I cannot use the earlier ones.I then went to the command prompt and tried "scanreg / restore". This allowed me to install a backup registry from Friday but it had no effect. I then ran Dr watson and saw " has rewritten system files" no other advice I then tried my Norton rescue disks, chose the option to rewrite the partition info,CMOS and boot info and got "Cannot access the specified drive(D)-unable to write to the drive" I then tried my Partition magic disks and the D drive(and its partitions) are no longer listed. I also tried the dual boot disk I made (per Newgrl) and get the same message as a regular boot. Here is a copy of the boot.ini file [boot loader] timeout=30 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect C:\="Microsoft Windows" What the heck could have caused this? Any ideas on getting it back or is all lost? jimi_l |
