Subject: validation fails after new HD
OS: Windows Xp
CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron/750Mb
Model/Manufacturer: emachines t1100
Comment:

My HD gave up after 4 yrs, so I replaced it. I used the restore discs from emachines to re-install windows XP. However, when it came to the register page, to register with both emachines and microsoft, I skipped it.

Now I get all those "messenger service msgs"
asking me to go to regfixit.com etc. I went to windows update but it wont let me download anything because I am not able to be validated.

I tried to re-register with microsoft, but I dont know how to do it.How can I get some windows updates ? Thanks for your help.

In Windows HELP, click Index, then type

registering Windows online

then double click those words below that.

Customers of OEM manufacturers do not 'register' with Microsoft. The OEM manufacturer is responsible for all customer assistance. Contact Emachine.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

First of all go to services.msc and turn off the messenger service. If you are getting these messages you don't have a properly working firewall.
When you went to updates did it ask for you to download and install the Windows Genuine Advantage tool? If your computer is four years old do you have sp1 or just XP without a service pack. I don't think that they are giving update unless you have sp1 or sp2 installed on your machine. You can download sp2 here.
