My computer does not boot up and I am trying to figure out how to use system restore without fully booting up windows. I have tried safe mode with command prompt, but my computer freezes before it gets to the command prompt.
Thanks, Tim

Hi ... System restore wouldn't work if you never created a restore point , but any ways to find how to do a system restore is done by doing the following >>> Start >>> All programs >> Accessories >> System tools >>> this is where you will find system restore ... Though if you are having problems you might want to go into Safe mode and perform a virus scan with your anti virus programs

Have you tried the other Boot Options like
Last Known Good...A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP
Do this if you cannot get into Safe-Mode:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP

I would do that but I can not enter safe mode either. I have also tried every other way to boot up with no luck.

You have a compaq so this may not work. If you have a full XP CD you can use this. --How to do a system repair.--Boot from the xp cd and go past the recovery console to the install menu. Select repair the existing installation. You won't lose any data except the xp updates. Unless you have a slipstream sp1 cd you will have to d/l sp1 and all subsequent updates. You MUST have at least SP1 installed and the updates for security reasons. Be sure the firewall and A/V is active before going online as you will be susceptible to sasser and msblaster. If you don't want SP2 go to autopatcher.com and d/l SP1 and subsequent updates.

Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt
Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt. For additional information about the Safe mode with a command prompt, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
