I am running XP pro. I want to set up Remote Desktop connection in my dorm room so
that I can access my PC from labs on campus. I have signed up at No-IP.com, and have
a server name and am running the program. The problem is, I can't seem to connect
to my PC. I was running Zone Alarm, and then I decided to give my router firewall
a try. (The router is serving no other purpose other than a firewall.)

First, when I had Zone Alarm on, I read that you need to open Port 3389 for Remote
Desktop. I did that, but still nothing. Then, with my router firewall, I used the
Virtual Servers, and tried the same thing, by port forwarding 3389 to the IP address
of my PC on the router network. This didn't work either. When I try to use Remote
Desktop, all I'm doing is putting my server name (which routes to my IP address)
in the Connect box, which is something like "username.servername.com". I have already
made sure to enable my PC to be controlled remotely. Anyone have and suggestions??

Ben: what is the OS on the lab computers?
if they are earlier than XP Home then you need to install the Remote Desktop client software on the lab computers by running msrdpcli.exe from the \support\tools folder of the Windows XP Professional installation CD.

other users of Remote Desktop had these comments:

1. "DMZ Host, make sure it's turned off. (set to 0)."

2. "experienced this issue with the standard 4 port Linksys router (with the latest firmware). It also crashes your browser if you're using the IIS-based TS client. To test a theory, I swapped the old Linksys out for a new 802.11b Linksys router, and configured it the same way. IT WORKS GREAT!!! Definitely a Linksys issue."

3. "finally gotten my remote desktop to work, and all I did was upgrade my firmware (on the router). I had version 1.23, now I have 1.42.6. If any of you still have any problems, I'd suggest patching the firmware."

4. "I have found the remote desktop uses port 3389 to make the initial connection and then uses random ports after that. The only way that I've gotten remote desktop to work so far with my router is to open the router's DMZ to the computer that you are trying to connect to."

let us know what worked for you...
