All,

I am needing to use the XP Recover console option (by booting with the XP CD) in order to address a boot problem.

The problem occurs when I choose the XP option on a dual boot machine (XP and Win98).

It has one physical drive partitioned into C and D. XP on D, Win98 on C.

The Win98 choice boots just FINE. The problem only occurs when choosing the XP PRO boot option. (the error is: missing/corrupt hal.dll ---yes...still trying).

Well...one possible fix is the BOOTCFG/REBUILD command from the command line via the Recovery console option.

QUESTION IS: Will that command know that I only need to fix the XP PRO boot portion??
(the initial machine boot up to the dual boot option menu works just fine)

I REALLY do not want to risk messing-up that initial boot option...b/c the Win98 is all I got, at this point.

ALSO - all my XP DATA is all there on the D partition and completely accessible from Win98. But does the BOOTCFG/REBUILD command risk messing with the boot sector in any way that will make that go "poof?"

THANKS VERY MUCH!

You bet...

- actually, the boot.ini file is on the C drive - none on the D with this dual boot setup.

(It's been a long journey).

Which partition is windows trying to boot?
Look in boot.ini. If drive D is the second partition then you should have an entry such as:

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows

Do you have any non win/dos partitions betweet C: and D: ?

Yes, in both cases:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
C:\ = "Microsoft Windows"

Also see post#60815
@ http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/60815.html for a full explanation of the boot.ini issue. I am beginning to believe that it is just fine.

My main concern is the use of BOOTCFG/REBUILD via the xp console mentioned above (see above for details).

THANKS
