I am the only user (other than Admin) on my computer, this computer is not connected to the internet. Is it important that i log off when the computer is going to be unattended... what i mean is will the computer be damaged in anyway if i do not do this...?

Another Question:

When I got the computer (its 3 years old and we got 4 for free.) it had Administrator as the only user, when i created my name Administrator is gone from the welcome screen, Adminstrator is still listed on the C: drive although i did not delete the acount... why?

Thanks for the help

My 2 Computers:

IBM Netvista 6578-LAU Windows 98SE

Dell Demension 4300 Windows XP Home 384MB

IBM Thinkpad A31
Windows XP Professional
256MB really not enough of RAM Pentium 4 processor

It wont get damaged but anyone coming into your house can use it. It is normally better to have 2 users: one admin and one non admin. Always use the non admin unless you really need to. That is for XP. On 98 everyone is admin.

No idea about the second question.

Administrator account is installed by default and can't be removed. If you can log in as administrator right now, I would suggest that you attempt changing the password and remembering it. Should you ever need to boot to safe mode you will need the administrator password. Sometimes hitting enter is used as the password when setting up the computer. That MAY not work if you need to log in under safe mode. Password is also needed to use the repair console. Hope this helps. BTW, when you created the second user account did you give yourself administrator priviledges? That is a good idea.

Administrator is hidden as logon in normal mode once another user account is created. It will reappear if you enter safemode. To remove the administrator's camouflage in normal mode you have to make a change in the registry. If you are comfortable in doing so instructions can be found here.

You should consider turning off the computer with a proper shutdown and use a power strip to protect the system. There is no need to waste energy for such a simple task. Heat and current is the killer of components. I know silly people claim it might not turn back on. I wouldn't leave my car turned on all the time would I?

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

"Password is also needed to use the repair console."

Actually, if the recovery (repair) console is installed on the hard drive (as opposed to running from the CD), a blank administrator password will be accepted. Google for more information on installing the recovery (repair) console to the hard drive.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
