User's desktop changes to default at logon

October 9, 2009 at 10:24:20
Specs: Windows 2000
Single Win2K domain 100 nodes (workstations)

Random users, at times, log in to the domain from their workstation and are presented with the default user profile desktop instead of their current domain desktop profile that they are used to using and seeing.

I know how to fix this at the workstation level via the registry, but I would like to figure out the root cause of the issue so I can fix it for good.

FYI - Our domain controller is also a DNS server pointed to itself for resolution. passes all dcdiag tests just fine.

Not using roaming profiles.

Is there anyone out there with a fix for this?

Are the users accounts set to be stored on the server or on the local machine? you can find this out in "computers and users" (not quite sure, I am not on a WIN2K server atm) and check to see where the user profiles are stored?

Hey thomasad,

They are stored locally on each machine.
