Did your printer come with software to install with it?

If so unplug printer, install software, reconnect printer when prompted or when install is complete.

It would also help you to know what group policies are in place that might limit users abilities to add or remove hardware.

Is the computer connected to a network?

Are we talking about a local admin profile or a server admin profile?

Need more information please

Local profile, no network. After some discussion, I wonder now about the printer driver with the new install (microsoft driver, not the manufacturers) but still don't understand why we can't delete a printer. Must uninstall?

New install? Of the operating system? Upgrade or clean install?

Was the user you logged in as an administrator at the time of login? If the user has been changed to an administrator the change will not take place until you log off and back log on.

Sorry... New printer install. Local printer plugged in via USB, XP reported hardware ready to use, but this printer then was not listed under Printers and Faxes. Also, same user unable to delete an older printer, instead received message about permissions. No changes to user, already had admin.
