I've had my computer 5 years, the last week this white rectangular icon with blue top appears in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen taking up two inches of space. It doesn't do anything, if you right click on it nothing happens. How do I get rid of it?

Did you install any new hardware or software just prior to this Icon appearing?

You can find lots of good free spyware progs by clicking on the red link, they are all listed on one page with basic instructions. Run those and let us know how you made out.

Also install winpatrol which is also on the same page.

Thanks for these answers. I ran my old standby, the ad-aware 6.0 from Lavasoft, it still removes 20-30 data miners every month or so when I run it. That was a few hours ago and the problem icon has not reappeared so far.

I'm surprised Adaware6 even works anymore. Does it still allow you to update? AdawareSE is slated for end of support at the end of the year. 2007 is the current version.

You may want to look t your restore points and create one now that doesn't have the issue.

No, I can't update it, nothing happens, the date on the last reference file is Oct 2004. But it still grabs a lot of data miners.

Afraid I don't know what restore points are.

Well, it's back today. Have to ask, how to you create a screen shot (which I assume is a picture of my desktop with that icon)?

I appreciate the help!

I assume with the unwanted icon back on the screen now is not the time to restore.

If you did as I suggested in #5 here you should have a good restore point.

I suggest that if Adaware6 cleaned this up before, that you DLoad Spybot S & D 1.4. It finds most of the same nasties as Adaware but also has an immunize feature that blocks future infections of known nasties. Read how to immunize properly as I has found that many folks are confused by the process. Find it and Adaware2007 below.

I have the screen shot as a jpeg, but don't know how to post it. Anyone have a suggestion? It won't paste.

Did that, amazing. My screen shot has a web address now.

This is a picture of the window that keeps opening up. It does nothing when you right or left-click it.
It has once again disappeared today after running the old Adaware and re-starting, I'm not certain that Adaware is the reason it's gone, maybe it's just the re-start.
I'm reluctant to put in a new spyware tool right away. The customer reviews have a lot of stories of time-consuming bugs with the new Adaware and Spybot. But I will get around to that when I have time to work with it.

Try Crap cleaner and also regscrubXP which are listed in the red link.
Also try unchecking everything in start-up EXCEPT your AV and firewall.

If you aren't willing to use the tools recommended to you we aren't going to be able to help you. Adaware 2007 is more cumbersome than AdawareSE, which is still being updated. However, Spybot search & destroy 1.4 is an Excellent freeware program that I have been using since version 1.3 without ANY problems at all. It is capable of removing malware that other programs can't handle. The major feature of Spybot is the immunization feature.

You need to educate yourself on computer use. If you keep getting the same malware back you are evidently returning to the offfending site or you have not cleared your browser cache of temp files and cookies.

Go to Internet Explorer and click tools> options> delete cookies> delete files.

You may need to re-enter login info at sites you visit.

Empty your recycle bin and run Spybot S&D after updating it. After running it check all the boxes of spyware it identified and instruct to remove. Now click on the imminize button on left and then the imminize cross at top. You have now immunized against re-infection from the sites that were found. Update often. I look each time I use it.
