Use Win98 boot disk & fdisk / mbr on NTFS ?

Specs: Windows XP, P4/512MB
Being advised to go to and download and create a win98 Boot Disk, I ended up with a half MegaByte file on a CD (RW). When I clicked on it, nothing happened, so I don't really know what I have. I never saw what I expected to see on a boot disk.

In any case, how does a (presumeably) DOS boot disk reach into an NTFS partition with WinXP and fix the mbr, anyhow? Do I have to convert the partiton to FAT32 (or FAT16) first?

Do you not have an XP Install Disk?
A 98 Bootdisk will not be able to repair the boot record for XP which is based on NT.
You need to boot up an XP Install CD and go into R for Recovery Console to run the FIXBOOT and FIXMBR commands.
