My computer is USB 1 and my new umax astra 4700 scanner is USB 2. Do I need a special driver to get the scanner to work? Computer acknowledges that the scanner is attached but can't scan.

You can use a USB1.1 device in an USB2.0 slot but not vice-a-versa, the 1.1 is much slower than the 2.0. You need a PCI addon card for your puter...

Sorry to disagree with Beth on this, but most, if not all, USB 2.0 devices I have seen will operate in USB 1.1 slots. They just won't operate at the faster speeds. In fact, here is a blurb off of the Umax site about it:

"The USB 2.0 Connection provides easy connection to all computers with a USB port. USB 2 is backwards compatible with first generation (v1.n) USB ports".

Here is another blurb off the Umax site about operating system compatibility:

OPERATING SYSTEMS

Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000; XP(not certified)

Note the statement about XP. Could be your problem.

Good luck!
