USB to COM1 converting

I have Laptop Toshiba Satellite 1900-102: Windows XP Pro SP1, Pentium 4 CPU 1.7 GHz 256 MB of RAM, with 3 x USB1.1 - ports, without COM – Ports, USB 1.1 to 9 pin RS232 Converter type Prolific USC-2000 (further: "Converter"). I need to convert USB to COM1 (because some of our instruments work only through COM1 Port). When I connect Converter to some USB-Port, it automatically converts USB to COM2. I can see that in "Device Manager – Ports(COM & LPT) – Prolific USB-to-Serial CommPort(COM2)". I try to change COM2 to COM1: right-key click on "Device Manager - … -Prolific USB-to-Serial CommPort(COM2) – Properties - Port Settings - Advanced…- COM Port Number - but I can't do that because I see the message: "COM1 in use". My questions: 1. How can I know, what device uses COM1 - Port (if it's "in use")? 2. Can I cancel "using" any COM – Port (that meens, "to release" the port)? How can I do that ? Thanks, Ella.
