Comment:

I have installed 3.5" hard drive in a USB 2.0 enclosure and unfortunately have a problem.
I have set up exactly as per instructions and tried to use with both my desktop pc and my laptop - one on Windows ME and the laptop on XP.
On connecting I get new hardware found "USB to IDE"
Then identifies that it is a mass storage device identifying the hard drive correctly and then says installing hardware.
This is then followed by an error message saying problem encountered installing your hardware, hardware may not work correctly.
On entering my computer the drive is not listed!!
I have had the unit replaced and also a new cable in order to eliminate those and the problem persists.
I have no problem with a similar 2.5" usb 1.1 storage device!!
Can anyone offer any advice on how to overcome this as it is imperative that I get this operating asap.

go to the Manufacturer web site and download the latest drivers. windows might have the drivers but are corrupted or missing so you have to get them yourself.

PLEASE WRITE BACK IF MY ADVICE WAS HELPFUL

mess with the best, suffer like the rest.

frejo,

Can you check on the following areas

A)2.0 USB devices new drivers both for the motherboard as well as the Windows Opertating system.Without which, you get the device not recongnized error.I had the same error, fixed when I updated my windows

B)Try to remove any other USB devices connected to the system.Just use the 3.5" hard drive connected to the system only. Also try to check the USB cable

C)Try different USB ports

D)Try to download the hard disk drivers from the manufactures website.Go to google and type the same model, make ,capactiy with the words "drivers for windows XP"

Hope the above info will get the problem solved.

Take care.Post your reply !

I am having the same problem. I have recently updated my PCs from SP1 to SP2. My USB hard disks worked with SP1 but are now not recognised.
If you have any luck please let me know.

Thanks. I tried that but it says that "the wizard could not find a better match for your hardware than the one you currently have installed".

Any ideas?

Tried to download updated drivers but no luck as yet. Microsoft site acknowledges on a different page that there is a problem that may be corrected in SP3 whenever that comes to fruition - there is no solution offered!!
I have run various driver updating programs but these have not been successful YET!
I will post again when I have some news - there must be others who have or have had the same problem - I will post on another board and see if I get a response.
Thanks for inputs so far.

Unplug all usb cables, then shut down computer turn off at wall and remove plug from wall socket, leave for 30 minutes to remove any residual electricity. Reboot computer. It sounds so simple, but after having same problem searched the net and found this answer several places. It worked for me first time.
