OK, so I recently built my own computer. First time I booted it up it worked fine for a few hours then the CPU died on me and I had to get a new one. Anyways, second time around the USB ports aren't working. Funny thing is they were working fine the first time... The computer recognizes that the USB ports exist but any time I try to plug in a device nothing happens. Any ideas what might be causing this?

Try removing the USB controllers and hubs from within Device manager, then reboot, allowing windows to re-install them. What caused the CPU to go bad?

Tried uninstalling and reinstalling in Device Manager but no go. Not sure what was wrong with the CPU. Quit on its own after a few hours. ASUS motherboard returned message "system failed CPU test."

Oops, sorry it took me so long to reply... Let's see. I can't seem to locate this ASUS Mobo CD you speak of. If it did come with one I've probably misplaced it. I had to move all my stuff to a different room recently and it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Anyways, I did use the ASUSUpdate tool that came with it and updated to the most recent BIOS but that didn't solve my problem. I also used Windows Update and installed all of the updates and that didn't do it either. The thing that's really got me confused is that the system recognizes the USB ports, it just doesn't recognize anything I plug in to them. It's really starting to annoy me because I have this awesome new machine and I can't use any of my USB accessories on it, and I have a lot... mouse, keyboard (I'm using P/S2 for now), QuickiDrive, controller, joystick, remote reciever (came with my video card), etc...

Found my ASUS Mobo CD... When I try to install the USB 2.0 drivers it returns the message "Please using Windows XP SP1 (Service Pack 1) or later versions, you DO NOT need to
install this driver, because they already contain software support for USB 2.0." Dead end.Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.
