Recently my USB optical mouse stopped working, I tried a replacement but still had no joy.

In the end I reformatted and reinstalled XP, and it seemed to do the trick. However everytime my USB ADSL Modem connected the mouse would again fail to work.

After changing things around it seems that i cannot have any two USB devices in at the same time. If I unplug the modem & mouse and try the mouse again after replugging in it works.

I have the same problem if I plug my USB scanner in - no mouse.

I have 4 ports at the back and 2 at the front and it happens on all six.

I don't know if it is related but I recently got a digital camera and mp3 player, both of which use USB 2.0 It seems my ports are only version 1 as it gives a message when I use the new items that they are not working as quick as they could be. Thye motherboard is only a few months old.

The only answer I can see is to geta new motherboard, or try getting a PCI USB expansion card.

Does anyon know what may have caused the problem and any advice on a solution?

Thanks.

Try getting your USB Root Hub drivers updated.

Also - check for conflicts. Maybe your USB and mouse conflicts with each other?

mpawsey: you would like to have up to five devices running on your USB ports; that takes up a lot of power from your USB card, which is limited in power output.

recommend you purchase a powered USB hub which gives you four more ports and run your modem and one or more devices off that.

right-click My Computer, select Properties, Hardware tab, Device Manager, double-click a device attached to your USB ports, open the Power management tab and uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".
repeat for the other USB devices.

let us know what worked for you...
