I have a asus p4p800 mothberboard... its got 6 or 8 usb ports, forgot... anways... i have two that are in front of the case all hocked up and the jumpers seem to be set correctly.. when i try to plug something in the front usb ports... a message comes up at the buttom right of my screen saying

"A USB device has malfunctioned and exceded the power limits of its hub port. You should disconnect the device.

Then it says

"Recommendation. To reenable the port, disconnect the hardware and click reset. if you click close, the port will no longer function."

Ive tryed and it didnt work, is going on>? My back ports work just fine.... When i do what it says, the same thing comes up again........any help thanks.

"jumpers seem to be set correctly"

I kinda doubt that. The error message tells me that you probably do not have the wires to the motherboard connected correctly.

Does this happen with any device?

Then it may be that the ports are not wired correctly and the system is detecting an overload to prevent the hub from going up in smoke.

Check your mboard manual for which wire goes where on the mboard headers for USB, and the wiring of the connectors of the ports. USB wiring was never standardized - there are several common wiring patterns, and also some oddballs. Any one mboard manufacturer tends to use the same USB header pinouts/wiring for all their mboards, but differemt manufacturers may use different wiring, and any may not be in the same pattern as in the female wiring connectors to the case, or to ports on a plate in a slot if it didn't come with the mboard, especially if the female connectors are one piece 4 or 5 in a row, or one piece double row.
On top of that, if your mboard has firewire headers on the mboard as well, the arrangenment of the pins and the number of pins is exactly the same as on the USB headers on Asus mboards. If you connect USB ports to a firewire header by mistake, or visa versa, you will not have an immediate indication of a problem, but when you plug in something it will be connected to the wrong circuits, and the circuits and the device you plug in will sooner or later be damaged and will never work again.
