USB stopped working after a Windows repair install. All USB devices are showing in Device Manager, but Windows doesn't see them. I get no error messages, the devices just don't work. What is the problem? I have SP 2 installed.
I tried uninstalling all usb devices (root hub etc.) from device manager and booted, but no effect.

How did you do repair reinstallation when you only have HP Recovery CD supplied with your HP Pavilion dv5009? HP Recovery CD lacks repair reinstallation other than full restoration to factory state.

I do have a Windows installation disc, I don't have a recovery disc. :S This machine came with Windows XP Home installation disc (I had to install it myself) and with a HP applications install disc.

I had to do the repair installation because the PC had problems with standby. It wasn't because of Windows though, it was Adobe Type Manager which caused it. So the repair installation was not necessary after all. It seems it just messed everything up.

I'm not willing to do a fresh installation, because I have lots of files in the hard disk and it's a pain to backup and install every program again.

Reinstall your MOBO chipset drivers.

Or else scout HP site for drivers unique to your model. You should know that HP is a proprietary PC that depends on proprietary drivers for the hardware to work. Windows XP CD does not do it for you in this scenario.

Have you unplugged the USB devices and plugged them back in? If the devices require software, reinstall that as well.

Life's more painless for the brainless.

Ok So either go out and purchase new USB Ports to install or purchase a New Hard Drive as a storage hard drive to back up your Files to and then perform a Destructive (New) Installation of Windows XP to your hard drive.

I installed everything from the HP Applications/drivers CD, but it didn't help. The odd thing is, that my USB printer works perfectly well, but USB mass storages and digital camera stay unseen by the Explorer. They all are visible in Device Manager, but not accessible in Explorer. All drivers are installed. I don't have a clue of what's wrong.

Oh, I forgot to mention, my USB mouse also works. The problem seems to be only with memory sticks, cameras and mp3-players. Very odd.

The drivers for enhanced USB (USB 2.0) are corrupt or absent.

Until you repair or install them, you will not have USB 2.0 unless you use an add on card.

Where can I found those USB drivers? I thought they are already installed, if the flash drives and such are visible in Device Manager. I just want them to start working. And I don't know what the lack of USB 2.0 has to do with this, the flash drives work with USB 1.1 too.

Enhanced USB drivers are available from the manufacturer of the motherboard's chipset.

This has HP's motherboard and I didn't find any drivers from HP's site. I googled the model of the motherboard (according to Everest) and found nothing. I installed the drivers again from the HP's disc but no effect.

Hi, I returned to tell you how this was solved. I called HP tech support again and at first they told me to do a clean reinstall of Windows, which I didn't want to do. Then they suggested that I make a new user account. It helped, all USB started to work and when I switched back to my original user account, they still worked! I'm so relieved this was fixed. I am surprised though, that no-one here has had the same problem. It seems that I get all the errors and problems no-one has answers for. :S

So the "old" account didn't have USB "privileges"?

That's odd.

Yeah, it is odd, when the old account's usb started to work also. The oddest thing is that only mass storage drives didn't work, USB mouse and printer did! I bet I'll never understand computers, they seem to be quite illogical.
