sometimes a periphial must be installed before connecting the usb cable. some softwares use their own usb connection software , so one must connect usb cable after software drivers are installed, thus enabling the periphial to find the drivers in its own software, even tho xp has drivers installed. just an idea, in case

Is this a desktop or laptop? How many USB devices are used? Does the system detect any USB device or is it a specific one? What is the device that is not getting detected? Did the device ever work and is now failing to detect? Most of the devices will detect automatically, some need reboot or possible drivers, in the case of an external hard drive the system could be failing to detect correctly if the drive is failing/failed. Answers to the questions can help determine the recommended solution.

Good luck,

Richard

If the USB devices detect in other systems and they all fail no matter where they are plugged in it could be the USB controller on the systemboard failed and that means the board would need replaced or a PCI USB card installed.

Try booting into safe mode and removing ALL instances of the USB controllers. Reboot and re-install.
