Hope this helps someone, as it did the trick for me with regards to mouse freezing/hanging randomly.
As per Logitech support page this may happen if the mouse mat/pad is dark, try using a piece of white paper or a lighter coloured mat/pad. This worked for me so i thought i would share this info with others, i did not see this solution among the threads i searched, so i hope it helps someone.

hmmmm....are you talking about an optical mouse? If so, the flat paper works fine. If you use it on a shiny desk or anything at all that's shiny, the mouse will be eratic.

Yep you both are right. Shinny and glass survaces reflect the light and it confuses the infrared reader. Some Black mouse pads will do the same. Not all of them but some do.

Yes i was talking about an optical mouse, it works on my desk which is a chipboard with smooth formica surface, i would consider that reasonably shiny, it's also a light beech wood colour.
I didn't know about the glass or shiny surface, this site is great for learning all things computer related, it has helped me out on more than one occasion. Thanks for your replies.
